Hyderabad Taps Treated Wastewater for Industry

Hyderabad is advancing sustainable water management through large-scale public-private partnerships focused on treated greywater supply. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is seeking developers to design, finance, build, operate, and maintain systems for treated wastewater distribution to industrial and commercial hubs. This strategic move aims to conserve precious freshwater resources and bolster the city's long-term water security.

Two primary corridors are slated for development: Attapur to Chandan Valley, targeting data centers and manufacturing, and Nagole to Future City, serving IT parks and commercial establishments. Projections indicate a substantial demand, with the Attapur corridor needing 233 MLD and the Nagole corridor 290 MLD by 2035.

These initiatives align with circular economy principles by encouraging the reuse and recycling of wastewater for non-potable applications. The partnerships are expected to generate revenue for HMWS&SB through a revenue-sharing model with private concessionaires, who will manage infrastructure and collect fees from consumers.

Complementing these projects, the state government will introduce a comprehensive Wastewater Reuse Policy to incentivize adoption of treated wastewater. This policy will include guidelines and regulatory measures to encourage industries and institutions to embrace recycled water, easing pressure on potable water supplies and fostering a reliable network for Hyderabad's growth.
