Hyderabad Water: Critically Polluted Sources Exposed
7 Jan
Summary
- Four of Hyderabad's six major water sources are critically polluted.
- Contamination includes sewage, faecal coliform, and industrial effluents.
- Ageing pipelines also pose a significant risk of cross-contamination.

Hyderabad's drinking water supply faces a critical threat, with studies revealing severe pollution in four of its six major sources that cater to approximately 80% of the city's daily requirement. These sources, including Osmansagar, Himayatsagar, Krishna, and Godavari, are contaminated with sewage, faecal coliform, and industrial effluents, according to research published in September 2025 and March 2025.
The condition of Osmansagar is particularly alarming, exhibiting high levels of heavy metals and faecal bacteria, attributed to untreated sewage and industrial discharge. Similarly, reports from NIT Warangal highlight industrial pollution hotspots along the Krishna river, while a joint study by NEERI and IIT-Hyderabad points to untreated wastewater entering the Godavari river. These issues pose significant public health risks, potentially leading to widespread waterborne diseases.
