Hyderabad Cleans Up: Air Quality Sees Major Improvement

Hyderabad is being recognized for its clean-air initiatives, with a notable 26.37% reduction in annual-average PM10 levels over the past seven years. This improvement is largely attributed to the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging network and effective waste-to-energy infrastructure.
The city has established 190 public EV charging points, supported by over 470 private ones, contributing to an estimated annual avoidance of more than 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Electricity consumption at public EV charging stations has surged dramatically, underscoring increased adoption.
Furthermore, waste-to-energy plants in Jawaharnagar and Dundigal process approximately 3,200 tonnes of municipal waste daily, converting it into electricity. However, persistent challenges include road dust, construction and demolition waste, and vehicular emissions.
Experts emphasize the need to reduce reliance on motorized transport, strengthen public transportation, and implement stricter regulations for construction activities and waste burning to further enhance air quality.
