Every weekend, Lavanya Ganti and Deepti Reddy Kundur advocate for a crucial message: waste management starts at home. These two homemakers have dedicated nearly four years to persuading Hyderabad residents about the importance of segregating wet and dry waste at the source.
Their campaign, which began in their own Tellapur home, has since expanded to over 2,000 households across 26 gated communities, with 23 now actively practicing waste segregation. This initiative has prevented over 1.52 lakh kg of dry waste from reaching landfills over the past two years.
Through their work with a 230-volunteer team, they've also cleaned nine truckloads of waste from a neighborhood lake and promoted textile and sanitary waste recycling. Their efforts highlight how individual action can drive substantial environmental change, like averting over 3 lakh kg of CO2 emissions.
