Hyderabad Turns Sewage Into Gold: Water Reuse Initiative Launched

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is launching an initiative to treat sewage and maximize the reuse of wastewater. This aims to significantly reduce the dependence on fresh water and groundwater for non-potable purposes such as gardening, construction, and industrial cleaning.
As a crucial first step, all private sewage treatment plants (STPs) operating within Hyderabad must complete their registration process by October 1. This registration is mandatory for facilities located in residential colonies, gated communities, apartment complexes, commercial establishments, and industries. The HMWS&SB will conduct a citywide survey to geo-tag these STPs, collecting data on treatment capacity, technology, and water quality parameters.
This comprehensive database will identify reliable treated water suppliers. Builders and businesses can then source treated wastewater locally, bypassing the need for the Board's piped water supply for their non-potable requirements. Registered plants meeting quality standards will be recognized and provided a portal to update water availability regularly. The Board will also conduct surprise inspections to ensure ongoing compliance with treatment standards.
