Hyderabad's Lakes Polluted: STPs Exceed Norms in 2025
9 Sep
Summary
- Several Hyderabad STPs exceeded pollution norms for BOD, COD, and TSS in 2025.
- Key water bodies like Hussain Sagar and Musi river are impacted by these violations.
- The state filed a compliance affidavit before the NGT detailing plant-wise monitoring data.
Recent filings before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) reveal that several sewage treatment plants (STPs) in Hyderabad discharged pollutants exceeding prescribed norms in 2025. These violations affected major water bodies, including Hussain Sagar, the Musi river, and various city lakes. The Telangana government submitted a compliance affidavit detailing plant-wise monitoring data from 2025.
The affidavit highlighted instances where treated effluent from STPs exceeded permissible limits for biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and total coliform (TC). While the data pertains to tests conducted during 2025, it has raised concerns about the current state of the city's sewage treatment infrastructure.
Specifically, three STPs linked to Hussain Sagar—Khairatabad, KIMS/Picket, and Fatehnagar—showed parameter exceedances. Similarly, STPs discharging into the Musi river, such as Amberpet and Nagole, also reported violations. Several city lakes, including Pedda Cheruvu and Durgam Cheruvu, were also identified as receiving inadequately treated discharge.
The NGT had requested clarifications on earlier submissions regarding STP performance, leading to the filing of this latest affidavit. In a separate disclosure, the state also informed the tribunal about a significant municipal solid waste processing gap, with targeted completion of new infrastructure by December 31.
