1 Nov
Summary
- Treated wastewater to be supplied via branded green tanker trucks.
- Initiative aims to conserve drinking water for essential needs.
- Program starts with 19 STPs and 28 green tankers.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has introduced a novel green water tanker program to conserve drinking water and encourage the reuse of treated sewage.
This initiative directs treated wastewater from registered Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to be supplied via specially branded green tanker trucks, clearly marked for non-potable purposes. The program officially launched on November 1, 2026, coinciding with the Board's 37th Foundation Day.
According to officials, the directive from Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy aims to significantly decrease the use of fresh drinking water for activities such as construction, landscaping, and industrial processes.
Initially, the service operates from 19 STPs across the city, utilizing 28 green tankers. Government departments, public parks, and greenery maintenance will receive priority. Future phases will expand the service city-wide.
To enhance efficiency and transparency, the board plans to implement a dedicated booking system, GPS tracking, and e-POS systems. Special officers will oversee tanker filling points and supply operations, ensuring water quality and proper allocation.
