Hyderabad Heatwave: Sleep & Sanity Lost
11 May
Summary
- Over 80% of survey respondents report sleep disturbances.
- Nearly 70% of people report heat affecting mood.
- Informal workers face highest heat exposure and economic burden.

This past April and May, Hyderabad experienced extreme heat, leading to widespread heat-related illnesses and significant disruptions to daily life. A recent survey conducted by the Helping Hand Foundation highlights the severe impact on vulnerable populations, including migrant laborers and informal workers across major urban settlements.
The study, which surveyed over 1,000 individuals, found that prolonged exposure to high temperatures is significantly affecting sleep patterns. More than 80% of respondents reported some form of sleep disturbance during warm nights, with a considerable percentage experiencing frequent disruptions or complete inability to sleep. This indicates a widespread issue of sleep deprivation within these communities.
Furthermore, the survey revealed a notable psychological toll. Approximately 70% of respondents indicated that the heat sometimes affected their mood and behavior, while over 25% reported frequent emotional impacts. Researchers noted that extreme heat is increasingly emerging as a critical social and mental health concern in densely populated urban areas. Informal workers, who form the majority of the workforce, face the most intense heat exposure and disproportionately suffer the economic repercussions.
