Hurricane Isaias Breaks 75-Year Drought
9 Oct
Summary
- Hurricane Isaias marks the first hurricane of the 2026 season.
- Forecasters predicted a below-normal hurricane season for 2026.
- Warnings issued for Gulf Coast areas between Mississippi and Florida.

Hurricane Isaias has arrived, ending a remarkable 75-year period without a hurricane in the Atlantic by the end of September. This storm is the first hurricane of the 2026 season, a year that was forecast to experience below-normal hurricane activity. Initial predictions in May suggested a 55% chance of a quiet season, with that likelihood increasing to 75% by August.
The current forecast anticipates seven to thirteen named storms, with two to six potentially developing into hurricanes. Of these hurricanes, zero to two are expected to reach major hurricane status (Category 3 or higher). This contrasts with an average season, which typically sees fourteen named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
Isaias is the ninth named storm in the Atlantic this year. Prior to its formation, all other storms were tropical storms, predominantly occurring in mid-August through September. The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30. As of early October 2026, warnings and watches have been issued for areas along the Gulf Coast, specifically between Mississippi and Florida.
