Humpback whales are encountering fishing gear more frequently in years with warmer ocean temperatures, according to new research. This warming causes habitat compression, pushing whales into smaller areas that often overlap with fishing grounds. Before 2014, fewer than 10 entanglements were reported annually off the U.S. West Coast. This number surged to 31 in 2024 and exceeded 40 during a marine heatwave in 2015 and 2016.
Scientists found that shrinking cold-water habitat was a more significant factor in entanglement risk than population increases. They developed a Habitat Compression Index to forecast ocean conditions and entanglement risks six to 12 months in advance. This tool is already being used in California to help manage fisheries and reduce interactions. Technological solutions like ropeless fishing gear are also being implemented.
