Improvement works are scheduled to commence next month at Hull's historic Northern Cemetery, which opened in 1915. Significant deterioration has affected structures within the cemetery over the decades.
The Columbarium, a significant feature housing urns with cremated remains since 1936, has been particularly impacted by subsidence. Concerns regarding the structure's stability have been raised due to weathered walls and columns.
Renovation efforts will span from November to February 2027. Hull City Council aims to restore the cemetery, a final resting place for many servicemen and women from World War One and Two, for many generations to come.
Leaseholders of the Columbarium vaults are being contacted regarding access during the construction period. Some ashes may be temporarily relocated and stored by dedicated bereavement officers.
