A significant engineering feat occurred recently as a 20-tonne bridge, built in 1953, was expertly lifted from the banks of the River Hull by a crane. This spectacular operation, part of a £1 million renovation project, took place on Saturday in Beverley. The historic Weel Bridge is now undergoing specialist refurbishment in Sheffield.
The 12-week project encompasses not only the essential repairs to the 70-year-old structure but also the creation of a new pedestrian and cycle path. Council contractors Esh Construction and their specialist subcontractors managed the complex removal, highlighting the unique engineering challenges involved.
Significant road closures are in effect on Grovehill Road, with diversions along Weel Road and the A1035. Additionally, Beverley's household waste recycling centre is temporarily closed due to access issues. The council has expressed gratitude for local residents' patience during this period of disruption.
