A comprehensive week-long cleanliness campaign in Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation's Unkal Ward 36 concluded recently, transforming public spaces ahead of Gandhi Jayanti. The 'My Ward, My Responsibility' initiative, spearheaded by corporator Rajanna Koravi, involved daily participation of 200 to 300 volunteers.
Supported by the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation and Karnataka University Dharwad NSS units, the campaign focused on cleaning roads, drains, temples, schools, and the Unkal Lake Garden. Volunteers from 18 NSS college units, along with community members, cleared accumulated waste, including plastic and gutka sachets, from areas neglected for years.
The drive also emphasized creating awareness about segregating wet and dry waste and reducing plastic consumption. This effort by Ward 36, reported as the first of its kind among HDMC's 82 wards, saw volunteers extend their work to neighboring Ward 37, promoting a wider culture of civic responsibility.
Officials noted challenges with inadequate civic workers for the growing population and indiscriminate waste dumping. Residents highlighted that neighborhood cleanliness is a collective responsibility, essential for a beautiful city, praising the campaign for fostering resident engagement.
