90-Year-Old Lido Flooded by Climate Change
4 Sep
Summary
- A 90-year-old lido in Hertfordshire closed due to flash flooding.
- This is the second closure in just over a year for the pool.
- Climate change is cited as a cause for heavier rainfall events.

The beloved 90-year-old lido at Norton Common, Letchworth, in Hertfordshire has been forced to close following severe flash flooding. This unfortunate event marks the second time in just over a year that the popular swimming spot has been impacted by inundation.
Anglian Water confirmed that a storm overflow was activated due to exceptionally high rainfall occurring between August 24 and August 30. The water company attributes the increased intensity and frequency of such weather events to ongoing climate change, noting that heavier rainfall is likely and can quickly overwhelm dry ground.
The closure has caused dismay among regular users. Season ticket holder Kate Hughes reported the pool's closure, mentioning that the situation also involved sewage discharge, adding to the unsanitary conditions caused by the flooding.
