Historic El Nino Looms: Global Weather Upheaval Expected

El Nino conditions are intensifying, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasting a very strong event expected to be historic. There is a greater than 90% chance of a "very strong" El Nino developing by the end of this year, with the current event ranking as the second strongest on record for this time of year.

This intensification is poised to significantly influence upcoming Northern Hemisphere fall and winter seasons. El Nino, the warmer-than-average phase of a natural climate cycle, is measured by sea surface temperature anomalies in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Typical impacts across the United States vary by region, with warmer temperatures often observed in the North and near-to-below average temperatures in the South. Snowfall patterns are also affected, with increased odds in some areas and decreased odds in others.

Globally, record high temperatures are likely to be challenged. Past El Nino events, combined with long-term global warming trends, have contributed to warmer than normal global annual temperatures. This current strong event is expected to further elevate global temperatures.
