Hisar Industries Struggle with PNG Access
16 Jul
Summary
- Nearly 70% of Hisar industries lack piped natural gas access.
- Industrial units cite higher costs and supply uncertainty for slow PNG adoption.
- Six industries operated without mandatory permits; others violated conditions.

A significant infrastructural challenge hinders air pollution reduction efforts in Hisar district, as nearly 70% of industries lack access to piped natural gas (PNG). A report submitted to the National Green Tribunal on July 10 revealed that 99 of the 140 industrial units require new pipeline extensions, which could take 90 to 120 days for connection after signing agreements.
Industry representatives have voiced concerns regarding the higher cost of PNG and uncertainty about uninterrupted supply. These factors, combined with inadequate gas infrastructure, are slowing the transition to cleaner fuel. Despite these obstacles, PNG adoption has seen a gradual increase over the past six months, with the number of industrial consumers rising from 16 to 22.
Further inspections uncovered that six industries were operating without the necessary consent from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, while an additional six had violated their operating conditions. Legal proceedings have been initiated against these non-compliant units. However, some industrial associations oppose mandatory PNG conversion, citing recent investments in alternative fuel boilers.
