Summary
- Himachal Pradesh hosts elusive snow leopards, the state animal.
- Rare Himalayan birds like the monal flash vibrant, iridescent colors.
- High-altitude ungulates such as ibex and tahr inhabit rocky terrains.

Himachal Pradesh harbors a diverse array of rare Himalayan species, extending beyond commonly known wildlife.
High-altitude regions are the domain of the elusive snow leopard, the state animal, renowned for its camouflage. These mountains also host the spectacular Himalayan monal, a pheasant with iridescent plumage, and the secretive western tragopan, the state bird.
The rugged, trans-Himalayan terrain supports hardy ungulates, including the large-horned Himalayan ibex and the stocky Himalayan tahr. These species, along with the blue sheep (bharal), are crucial prey for snow leopards and are adapted to steep, rocky environments.
Even smaller creatures like the diminutive Himalayan musk deer are found in the temperate and subalpine forests, though their elusive nature makes them exceptionally difficult to spot in landscapes like the Great Himalayan National Park.
