Villagers Halt Illegal Construction with High Court Order
31 Aug
Summary
- Hundreds of villagers protested unauthorized construction on a wildlife spot.
- A High Court injunction was served over the bank holiday weekend.
- The site in Sawbridgeworth lacked planning permission for development.

Villagers in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, successfully halted unauthorized construction on a local wildlife spot this past weekend. Hundreds of residents gathered with camp chairs, peacefully protesting the development of land off Sheering Mill Lane. The construction, which began on Friday afternoon, involved heavy machinery and diggers.
East Herts Council was alerted early Saturday to the ongoing works, noting the site lacked any planning permission. The community's organized protest, with around 200 people attending on Sunday night, prompted swift action. A High Court injunction was served on bank holiday Monday.
Following the injunction, the area was cleared. Hertfordshire Police confirmed officers entered the site on Monday morning, and those occupying the land left peacefully. The injunction meant that any activity prohibited, including caravans on site and development, could lead to arrest, though no arrests were made.
Local officials, including Councillor Greg Rattey and Councillor Vicky Glover-Ward, praised the community's efforts and assured residents that behind-the-scenes work secured the necessary action. The council stated this action sends a clear message against unauthorized development, utilizing all available tools to intervene decisively.
