Helsinki has pioneered a unique solution for carbon neutrality by converting two abandoned underground oil caverns into Finland's largest heat storage facility. Located in Mustikkamaa, these caverns now hold 260,000 cubic meters of hot water, functioning as a massive 'heat battery.' This facility, operational since 2021, is a crucial step in Helsinki's journey towards carbon neutrality.
The project stores heat equivalent to powering 25,000 one-bedroom apartments year-round. It significantly reduces Helen's carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 21,000 tonnes annually. The stored heat, ranging from 50 to 90 °C, helps balance consumption peaks and decreases reliance on fossil fuels, especially during colder months.
Originally used for oil storage in the 1970s, the caverns were repurposed starting in 2018. The filling process with tap water began in December 2020 and took over three months due to the vast volume. Integrated into the district heating system by July 2021, the facility represents a model for sustainable energy management.
This innovative legacy project showcases Helsinki's commitment to sustainability. By transforming existing infrastructure, the city demonstrates a creative approach to meeting energy demands in a cold climate while paving the way for a greener future.
