Remarkable Rescue: Hedgehog Saved from Meter Pit
29 Apr
Summary
- Hedgehog named Bailey rescued from underground water meter.
- Worker Bailey Hall spotted the animal during routine upgrade.
- Hedgehog passed to Prickly Edge Hedgehog Rescue for care.

A hedgehog has been successfully rescued from an underground water meter chamber in Wakefield, an event hailed as a 'fantastic outcome' by rescuers. The incident occurred when Yorkshire Water worker Bailey Hall was performing a routine smart meter upgrade at Hollingthorpe Farm.
During his work, Mr. Hall noticed the hedgehog trapped within the open chamber. He collaborated with the farmer and colleagues, who brought specialized digging equipment to aid in the rescue operation. The hedgehog, subsequently named Bailey after her rescuer, was safely extracted.
The hedgehog was then placed under the care of Prickly Edge Hedgehog Rescue. A spokesperson for the charity expressed gratitude for the swift action, emphasizing the potential dangers such situations pose to hedgehogs. Initial assessments indicated Bailey was not dehydrated or injured and would be closely monitored.
This rescue follows another recent incident where a hedgehog was saved from a deep ground pipe on an Army camp in Dorset. The RSPCA highlights that hedgehogs are a vulnerable species in the UK, primarily due to habitat loss. This time of year, hedgehogs are often seen as they emerge from hibernation.
