Homeowner Switches Back to Gas Amidst Rising Heat Pump Bills
16 Apr
Summary
- Renewable energy investments led to unexpectedly high electricity bills.
- Heat pump electricity costs surged to over four times that of gas.
- A homeowner reverted to a gas boiler due to rising energy expenses.

Gavin Tait, a 69-year-old from Glasgow, initially embraced renewable energy technologies like solar panels, a home battery, and a heat pump, viewing it as a smart investment for both cost savings and environmental benefit. For a time, his well-insulated home remained warm, and his energy bills decreased as anticipated. However, this past winter, his electricity bills began to escalate significantly.
Facing soaring costs, Tait and his wife made the decision to switch off their renewable energy system and revert to using their gas boiler, which had been kept as a backup. He noted that while gas boilers are efficient, heat pumps can deliver significantly more heat per unit of energy consumed. The core issue, he explained, was the cost: electricity for his heat pump cost approximately 27p per kilowatt-hour, whereas gas for his boiler was less than 6p per kilowatt-hour, making gas more than four times cheaper.
