Thousands Oppose Hazardous Waste Incinerator
1 Nov
Summary
- Environment Agency to approve permit for hazardous waste incinerator.
- Thousands of local residents have lodged objections to the plant.
- Concerns raised over delayed soil sampling and potential particle build-up.
The Environment Agency (EA) has signaled its intention to grant a permit for a hazardous waste incinerator on Heighington Lane in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham. While the plant, built by Fornax North East, awaits final EA approval, the decision has drawn significant opposition, with thousands of objections lodged.
Despite acknowledging local concerns, the EA stated it could not find grounds to refuse the application. A second consultation period is now open until December 1st for residents to comment on the draft decision. Fornax expressed optimism for a final decision early next year.
Local MP Alan Strickland voiced disappointment, urging constituents to participate in the consultation. Resident groups and an independent councillor have raised alarms about potential health impacts, particularly concerning the proposed two-year delay before soil sampling. The plant is slated to process clinical waste and hazardous materials from the North East and North Yorkshire.
