The egrets' success created unexpected problems, particularly concerning aviation safety. Large flocks frequently congregated near airports for feeding and roosting, leading to an increased risk of bird strikes during takeoffs and landings. Airports like Honolulu, Lihue, and Hilo identified significant egret presence as a growing concern for air traffic.
Beyond aviation, the cattle egrets became a problem for prawn farms on Oahu, where they were observed preying on farmed prawns. This further complicated their role, shifting them from a beneficial pest controller to a new pest itself. Ecological concerns also emerged regarding their impact on native small vertebrates.
Attempts to manage the egret population, such as reducing numbers near Hilo, proved temporary. Birds would relocate to nearby sites and return once control efforts ceased. The study concluded that eradication would be difficult due to the birds' migratory habits between islands and their rapid recolonization of reduced areas.
Long-term management strategies now focus on discouraging egrets from sensitive locations, especially airports. The cattle egret's story in Hawaii serves as a prime example of how introduced species, initially intended for practical purposes, can lead to unpredictable ecological shifts and ongoing management challenges.
