Hawaii endured relentless deluges throughout March, with back-to-back storm systems dropping an estimated 7.5 trillion liters (2 trillion gallons) of rain. The storms, characterized by seasonal Kona lows, brought moisture-packed southerly winds that saturated the islands for days at a time.
The statewide average rainfall for March reached approximately 463.5 mm, significantly exceeding the typical March average of 174 mm. Some locations experienced rainfall exceeding 1,500 mm, and one station near Honolulu recorded nearly 500 mm in a single 24-hour period.
These persistent heavy rains triggered destructive flooding across several Hawaiian islands. Consequently, thousands of people were compelled to evacuate their residences. Honolulu, the state capital, recorded a staggering 346 mm of rain in March, approaching its annual average rainfall. The state's typical rainy season spans from October to March, concluding with this exceptional period of intense precipitation.
