Father Marks Son's Birthday by Planting 500+ Trees

In Haveri district, Fakkiresh Huralikoppi, a board-painting artist, has initiated a distinctive seven-year tradition of planting trees to celebrate his son Poorna's birthday. This environmentally conscious practice aligns with World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, the same day his son was born.

Fakkiresh has planted over 500 saplings, dedicating himself to their care until they are well-established. His commitment extends to watering, protecting them from animals with thorny branches, and clearing surrounding waste to ensure their survival and growth.

The inspiration for this endeavor struck Fakkiresh while visiting his former school. He recognized unused spaces and integrated tree planting and maintenance into his routine alongside yoga practice. He has planted various species like teak and neem across the school premises and along village roads.

Villagers affectionately refer to Fakkiresh as an 'environment lover.' He explains that his son sees the saplings as a gift from nature, making the annual planting a meaningful celebration that replaces traditional cake-cutting ceremonies.
