Haryana's Summer Woes: Ozone Levels Soar

Haryana is emerging as a significant hotspot for ground-level ozone pollution, posing a new air quality challenge during the summer months. Data from May revealed that twelve of the state's thirty monitoring stations exceeded national ambient air quality standards for ozone.

Nathu Colony in Ballabhgarh recorded particularly high concentrations, ranking seventh nationally and nearly tripling the standard eight-hour average. This rise in ozone, a pollutant formed by reactions between precursor gases in sunlight, highlights a shift from the winter focus on particulate matter.

Unlike localized particulate pollution, ozone can travel long distances, necessitating broader regional strategies. Health experts caution that prolonged exposure to elevated ozone can lead to respiratory problems, reduced lung function, and exacerbate conditions like asthma, while also negatively impacting crops and vegetation.
