The Haryana government has presented its defense before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding environmental clearance for a sand mining project. This project, situated in the Yamuna belt of Karnal, has drawn a challenge that the state argues is time-barred.
The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) detailed that the 94.35-hectare project at Chandraon Garhpur Tapu block received approval after thorough examination by the state expert appraisal committee in December 2023. Environmental clearance was subsequently granted in May 2024, permitting an annual production of 41 lakh tonnes of sand.
Key environmental safeguards are reportedly integrated into the clearance. These include measures for dust suppression such as high-pressure sprinklers and anti-smog guns, alongside a traffic management plan. The project also mandates the development of a community green belt and the planting of 33,900 trees.
