Summary

- Project includes observatory, cabins, lodge, and event hall.
- Appeal argues flawed traffic and environmental impact studies.
A proposed stargazing park in a rural residential area near Halifax is facing opposition from some local residents who fear it will disrupt their peaceful way of life. Approved by Halifax councillors in January, the development plan for Big Lake includes an observatory, 12 rental cabins, bunkhouses, tenting sites, a café, and a large lodge.
One resident has appealed the decision, arguing that the Halifax planning policies were not adequately followed and that traffic and environmental impact studies were flawed. She expressed concerns about increased noise and light pollution, stating her family sought a wilderness setting. A petition with 269 signatures supports the appeal.
The project's owner, an astronomer, contends that the scale of the development is being overstated and that the project aims to promote education and low-impact ecotourism while maintaining the area's quiet nature. He believes the development will inspire young people and is committed to adhering to local noise bylaws.
The Nova Scotia Regulatory and Appeals Board heard the appeal and is expected to deliver a decision by the end of September. The owner indicated that if the appeal is dismissed, the project may be developed in phases, pending securing necessary funding.
