8 Sep
Summary
- Residents endured four days of intense gutter odor, impacting daily life.
- Civic body cleared manhole blockages after protests and road blockades.
- Contaminated drinking water raised health concerns for the colony's inhabitants.
For four days, the residents of Mela Annathope in HMS Colony faced an overwhelming gutter odor, leading to sleepless nights and distress. The situation escalated on Tuesday when women from the colony took to the streets, demanding immediate attention from authorities. Their protest resulted in road blockades, prompting police intervention and swift action from the Corporation.
Corporation workers were dispatched and successfully cleared blockages in the manholes within approximately three hours, bringing an end to the sewage overflow on the roads. Residents reported that overflowing manholes since Friday had inundated low-lying houses and made the air thick with an unpleasant smell, affecting children's appetites.
The issue became more critical as drinking water supplied through taps was suspected to be contaminated with gutter water, raising serious health concerns. Women in the area demanded the distribution of potable water via tankers. Officials from the Health Department attributed the blockages partly to the improper disposal of sanitary napkins, plastics, and clothes in the manholes.
Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar acknowledged the grievances and assured residents of Ward 55 that their concerns would be addressed. He mentioned ongoing mass clean-up drives organized on Saturdays and stressed the importance of residents adhering to safe disposal guidelines to prevent future occurrences.
