Gurgaon's Dump Site Blooms: First Namo Van Arrives
19 Jul
Summary
- Gurgaon to unveil its first Namo Van on a reclaimed 23.8-acre dumping site.
- Over 5,000 native and climate-resilient saplings to be planted.
- Project aims to boost biodiversity and combat urban pollution.

Gurgaon will soon feature its first Namo Van, a significant green initiative located on a 23.8-acre compensatory afforestation site in Naharpur Kasan, IMT Manesar. This reclaimed dumping ground is being revitalized through extensive plantation drives. The project involves planting approximately 5,000 saplings of native and climate-resilient species.
Fencing will secure the area, protecting the new plantation from encroachment and grazing. This effort is part of a national initiative to create dedicated urban green spaces and bolster ecological infrastructure. Experts highlight the importance of reclaiming degraded land to improve biodiversity, reduce dust pollution, and enhance urban resilience.
The Namo Van project addresses Gurgaon's shrinking green spaces and rising temperatures, exacerbated by rapid urbanization. The Forest Survey of India reported a loss of 2.5 sq km of forest cover between October 2019 and February 2020. This initiative aims to counteract such trends by creating a new urban forest.
Once established, the urban forest is expected to improve the local microclimate, aid groundwater recharge, and provide vital habitats for local wildlife and pollinators. Regular monitoring and maintenance will ensure the long-term success of this ecological restoration effort in the district.
