One-Third of Haryana's Bio-Waste from Gurgaon
25 May
Summary
- Gurgaon generates 33% of Haryana's daily biomedical waste.
- 7,627 kg of biomedical waste produced daily in Gurgaon.
- 236 healthcare facilities operate without proper authorization.

In Haryana, Gurgaon accounts for a significant portion of the state's daily biomedical waste, contributing approximately 33%. The city produces 7,627 kg of this hazardous waste daily. This high figure is primarily due to the large number of hospitals, diagnostic centers, and healthcare facilities concentrated within the district.
The state's 7,733 healthcare facilities are responsible for generating waste including anatomical parts, used needles, expired medicines, and chemical waste. Proper disposal involves color-coded bins and labeling. Eleven centralized plants across Haryana process this waste, but some districts rely on facilities in neighboring areas, raising concerns.
A report by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board reveals compliance issues, with 236 healthcare facilities operating without authorization and 165 continuing despite rejected applications. Despite these violations, no notices were issued in the last fiscal year. Efforts are underway to strengthen monitoring and improve waste segregation at source.
