Gurgaon Dust Storm: CAQM Finds 258 Road Violations
16 Oct
Summary
- CAQM inspection revealed 258 violations on 52 road stretches in Gurgaon.
- Damaged footpaths and potholes contributed significantly to dust generation.
- Authorities directed to take immediate corrective measures or face action.
A recent inspection by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in Gurgaon has exposed significant deficiencies in the city's road cleaning and maintenance protocols. During the 'Operation Clean Air' drive, authorities documented 258 violations across 52 road segments totaling approximately 104 kilometers. These violations primarily involved accumulated road dust, construction waste, damaged footpaths, and potholes, all identified as contributors to dust generation and resuspension by vehicular traffic.
The inspection revealed that both the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had compliance gaps. MCG roads accounted for 174 violations, while GMDA roads had 84. In response, the CAQM has mandated that MCG, GMDA, and other relevant agencies prioritize corrective actions. They are required to ensure roads are kept dust-free through regular sweeping, waste removal, and prompt repairs. Failure to comply could lead to stringent legal actions, including prosecution.
This initiative is part of broader efforts under Operation Clean Air to assess and enforce air pollution control measures across the National Capital Region (NCR). The findings underscore the critical role of road maintenance in mitigating air quality issues, especially concerning PM10 and PM2.5 particles, which can have severe health implications ranging from respiratory ailments to cardiovascular problems.
