Gurgaon Air Quality Plummets to 'Very Poor' Levels
28 Jan
Summary
- Gurgaon's air quality index reached 306, entering the 'very poor' category.
- PM2.5 was the primary pollutant throughout January, causing recurring AQI spikes.
- Low wind speeds and stagnant conditions are preventing pollutant dispersal.

Gurgaon's air quality significantly worsened on Tuesday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 306, placing it in the 'very poor' category. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been identified as the dominant pollutant, particularly during January, leading to frequent spikes into hazardous levels between January 9 and January 22.
Officials attribute the decline to weak wind speeds and stagnant atmospheric conditions that prevent pollutants from dispersing effectively. Despite some light rain in the wider National Capital Region, local dispersion remained limited. Forecasts suggest generally cloudy weather with morning fog and low wind speeds continuing over the next few days.
The air quality is predicted to remain in the 'poor' to 'very poor' range for the upcoming days. Health advisories warn that prolonged exposure to such air quality can cause respiratory discomfort even in healthy individuals, with significantly higher risks for those with pre-existing conditions.
