Gurgaon's Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is implementing a comprehensive strategy to tackle air pollution, with a focus on construction and demolition (C&D) waste management. A new door-to-door collection service for C&D waste is being rolled out to ensure proper disposal and curb dust. The city has set an ambitious target to reduce its Air Quality Index (AQI) from 189 to 170 by 2026, alongside a 10% decrease in PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels.
Currently, Gurgaon generates approximately 1,500 tonnes of C&D waste daily, with 1,200 tonnes processed at Basai. To manage this, additional processing plants and designated collection points are planned. The strategy also encompasses easing traffic congestion, expanding electric vehicle infrastructure with new charging and battery-swapping stations, and intensifying dust control measures.
Enforcement includes 646 inspections at construction sites between January and March this year. Furthermore, efforts are underway to clear legacy waste at the Bandhwari landfill, where approximately 1.79 million metric tonnes remain. A processing capacity of up to 2 lakh metric tonnes per month has been established, aiming for complete clearance by March 2027. Surveillance is enhanced with 1,200 cameras operational and over 2,700 more planned.
