Gurgaon's air quality index (AQI) registered a concerning 378 on Sunday, placing it firmly in the 'very poor' category. The highest readings were observed in Sector 51, with an AQI of 415, indicating conditions that can lead to respiratory discomfort upon prolonged exposure. Throughout January, pollution levels have consistently exceeded 300, signifying sustained air quality challenges.
Officials from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) attribute the prevailing pollution to a combination of factors, including vehicular emissions, road dust, and adverse meteorological conditions such as low wind speeds and temperature inversions that trap pollutants. Local sources like construction activity and waste burning are also significant contributors.
