Gurgaon Chokes: Air Quality Plummets to 'Poor' for Third Day
9 Jan
Summary
- Gurgaon's AQI reached 290, marking three consecutive days of 'poor' air quality.
- Winter conditions like low wind speed trap pollutants, causing sustained air pollution.
- Health advisories warn of breathing discomfort, especially for vulnerable groups.

Gurgaon continues to grapple with significantly degraded air quality, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 290 on Thursday. This marks the third consecutive day the city has experienced 'poor' air quality, a trend attributed to persistent fine particulate matter. While a slight improvement was noted compared to earlier this week, pollution levels showed variability across different monitoring stations, with some reporting 'very poor' air.
Unfavorable winter conditions, characterized by low wind speeds and temperature inversion, are trapping pollutants close to the ground. Although brief periods of stronger winds offered limited dispersal, experts predict the air quality will remain unstable without sustained changes in wind patterns. Winter biomass heating, alongside vehicular and industrial emissions, contributes significantly to these elevated PM2.5 levels.
