Gujarat Zoos Battle 42°C Heatwave

Gujarat's zoos are actively combating the extreme heatwave, with temperatures surpassing 42°C across the state. In Ahmedabad, Kankaria Zoo's staff are employing a multi-faceted approach, including geothermal pipes, mist sprinklers, and coolers, to maintain optimal temperatures within animal enclosures. Lions, tigers, leopards, and monkeys are benefiting from these measures, while otters remain submerged in pools for relief. To combat dehydration, many animals are being given water mixed with ORS, and caretakers are diligently monitoring for behavioral changes indicative of distress.

Similarly, Indroda Park in Gandhinagar, managed by GEER, has installed 15 jumbo coolers and 20 sprinklers, aiming to reduce enclosure temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius. This facility houses approximately 600 wild animals, including lions, leopards, tigers, crocodiles, and various reptiles and birds. Veterinarians have adjusted diets, reducing food portions for carnivores by 500g to 1,000g daily to prevent bloating. Diets are now enriched with water-rich fruits and Vitamin-C oral rehydration salts to ensure adequate hydration. Both sanctuaries are utilizing natural shade from plantations, with medical teams maintaining continuous observation.
