- The new process creates a nutrient-rich, uniform soil product.
- Green waste facility at Mont Cuet now processes waste into superior compost.

Guernsey has implemented a significant shift in its garden waste management, introducing windrow composting to produce a superior compost for residents. This new method is designed to create a more uniform and nutrient-rich soil, enhancing its quality compared to previous outputs.
The States of Guernsey anticipates that thousands of tonnes of garden waste, including grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, and leaves, processed annually at the Mont Cuet facility, will now be transformed into this improved compost.
Douglas Button, Guernsey Waste's minimisation and sustainability officer, emphasized the project's alignment with circular economy principles. He stated that the island's garden waste is being repurposed into a valuable resource that residents can utilize for free to enrich their soil and support local cultivation.
Robert Roussel, a senior technical advisor for Guernsey Waste, acknowledged that past compost production was substandard. He expressed pride in the revised process, noting the compost's versatility for landscaping, soil mixing, and container planting. Residents can collect the free compost from the Longue Hougue site.
