The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has embarked on a significant systematic mapping program across several southern Indian states. In Tamil Nadu, the GSI is surveying a total area of 5,550 sq. km, including districts like North Arcot and Madurai, to identify deposits of crucial minerals such as sulphides, iron ore, and magnesite.
The GSI's initiatives also encompass Kerala, where approximately 2,450 sq. km in districts like Cannanore and Calicut will be mapped. This phase of the program will involve detailed mapping and drilling to investigate deposits of clays and graphite.
In Karnataka, the GSI is undertaking systematic mapping over 4,350 sq. km. Detailed investigations are planned for a range of minerals, including copper, lead, zinc, gold, and graphite, across numerous districts within the state.
