Gajendra Yadav, a 43-year-old resident of Pipra village in West Champaran, has devoted the past two decades to an extraordinary environmental mission, planting more than 10 lakh saplings. His relentless efforts have transformed barren lands into lush green spaces, earning him the title of "Green Guardian."
Yadav considers trees to be like family and has prioritized their care above all else. Facing heart health challenges and financial constraints, he chose not to marry, dedicating his life entirely to planting and preserving plant life. His commitment has been formally recognized by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who honored him for his substantial contributions to environmental conservation.
His environmental journey began in 1998 after a severe illness. While recovering, he was deeply moved by radio reports on global warming and vowed to dedicate his life to trees. Since 2003, he has planted diverse saplings—mango, guava, litchi, and jackfruit—along canal banks, farm paths, and on public and religious grounds.
Forest department officials and local leaders have lauded his work. Hemkant Rai, former DFO, noted Yadav's participation in government schemes, including planting poplar saplings under the Social Forestry Scheme and using his own funds for public plantations. Sakina Khatoon, a local mukhiya, described his profound connection to nature despite his heart condition.
