17 Apr
Summary
- Over 14,700 acres of Green Belt land are at risk of development.
- Less than 3% of England is adequately protected for nature.
- 190 locations across the UK are part of a mass protest for nature.

A national day of action is highlighting significant threats to the UK's Green Belt, with organizers suggesting over 14,700 acres are at risk of development. This land area is equivalent to more than 11,000 football pitches, underscoring the scale of potential loss.
Wildlife advocate Chris Packham stated that Britain's wildlife faces a critical threat, noting that less than 3% of England is sufficiently protected for nature. He stressed the importance of public support for conservation, warning politicians against ignoring this sentiment.
Communities across more than 190 locations in the UK are participating in protests. Organizers aim to demonstrate widespread public concern over the ongoing loss of natural habitats and the erosion of protections for green spaces.
Despite these concerns, a Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government spokesperson affirmed commitment to building 1.5 million homes to improve affordability. They stated these developments will not compromise environmental safeguards, pointing to a 15% increase in housing starts compared to the previous year.
