27 Apr
Summary
- 251 beaches are now designated 'Untrodden Beaches' for enhanced protection.
- Crete's famous beaches like Balos and Elafonisi are included.
- The Natura 2000 network now protects 10% of the EU's marine territory.

Greece has significantly expanded its network of protected coastlines, designating 251 beaches as 'Untrodden Beaches' (Apatites Paralies). This expansion, amending a previous Joint Ministerial Decision, aims to enhance environmental safeguards for these critical coastal zones.
The newly protected beaches are situated within the EU's Natura 2000 network, an extensive system dedicated to preserving valuable species and habitats. Natura 2000 represents the world's largest coordinated protected area network, covering substantial portions of the EU's land and marine territories.
Crete emerges as a major beneficiary, with numerous beaches across Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lasithi gaining protection. This includes internationally recognized destinations such as Balos, Falassarna, Gavdos, and Elafonisi, crucial for safeguarding their unique ecosystems.
Corfu's Halikounas beach, known for its natural beauty and suitability for watersports, also joins the protected list. Its adjacent Lake Korission is a vital habitat for over 100 bird species, further emphasizing the ecological importance of these designations.
