Monsoon Looms: Greater Noida Faces Waste Crisis
26 May
Summary
- Poor waste segregation in high-rise societies raises health concerns.
- Officials warn of mosquito breeding and disease outbreaks.
- Awareness sessions planned ahead of the monsoon season.

With the monsoon season approaching, Greater Noida is grappling with significant concerns regarding inadequate waste segregation and improper garbage disposal in its high-rise residential societies. Health officials are particularly worried about potential mosquito breeding and subsequent disease outbreaks in these densely populated urban areas. The primary challenge identified is the lack of wet and dry waste segregation at the household level, which compromises cleanliness and environmental health.
An awareness campaign on Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2026 and scientific garbage disposal was recently conducted at Valencia Homes Society. This initiative, led by the authority's health department and supported by NGOs, aimed to educate residents on waste handling methods and their personal responsibility. Proper segregation of waste and maintaining hygiene in common areas were emphasized.
Nikhil Singhal, president of Noida High Rise Federation, noted that monsoon exacerbates existing waste problems. Unsegregated waste can clog drains, worsen waterlogging, and create breeding grounds for mosquitoes. He stressed the need for societies to ensure daily disposal of wet waste and pre-monsoon cleaning of drains and waste points to mitigate these issues. Similar awareness activities are planned across other residential sectors.
