The vast Great Lakes, referred to as inland seas, pose significant water safety risks comparable to oceans, according to water safety expert Chris Houser. He highlights that these large bodies of water can generate dangerous waves, longshore currents, and strong rip currents, dangers often underestimated by the public.
Data from the Lifesaving Society reveals that fatal drownings are 45 percent more likely in lakes and ponds than in pools or bathtubs, with a notable increase in incidents from May to September. Vulnerable age groups include young adults aged 20-24 and individuals over 65.
To combat these risks, Houser launched a 'Smart Beach' pilot project in Kincardine, Ontario, in 2022. This initiative deploys sensors to monitor wave height, water levels, and currents, providing real-time safety information to beachgoers.
Houser hopes this technology will be expanded to other areas, such as Windsor-Essex, to become a standard approach for informing the public about hazardous conditions and promoting safer beach choices.
