Grantham Canal Leaks Threaten Businesses
4 Jul
Summary
- Grantham Canal faces major repairs due to water seeping through banks.
- Work aims to prevent damage to roads and protect nearby businesses.
- The £206,000 project includes safety features and a water level gauge.

The historic Grantham Canal, which opened in 1797 and links Grantham to Nottingham, requires substantial repair work to prevent water loss. Councillor Richard Cleaver highlighted that water seepage through the canal banks has led to road damage and negative effects on businesses. The situation is exacerbated by heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of bank failure.
Commencing on July 13, the essential works will focus on sections near Earlesfield Lane, Trent Road, and Swingbridge Road. These repairs, amounting to £206,000, are integrated into a broader five-year maintenance program. Beyond addressing the seepage, the project will implement improved water management systems, safety railings, steps, and a water level gauge.
While the canal ceased commercial operations in 1936, it is now primarily managed by The Grantham Canal Partnership, with contributions from South Kesteven District Council. Councillor Cleaver emphasized that these improvements are expected to benefit local wildlife and enhance the overall enjoyment of the canal area for the community.
