24 Jun
Summary
- High Court orders NMC to decide on Gorewada Lake sewage issue within six weeks.
- PIL alleges untreated sewage discharge harms aquatic life and public health.
- Court directs NMC to treat petition as representation for swift decision.

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court has ordered the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to decide on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) within six weeks. The PIL alleges that untreated sewage is being discharged into Gorewada Lake, causing significant environmental damage and posing risks to public health.
Justices Anil S Kilor and Raj D Wakode directed the NMC to treat the PIL as a representation and make a decision strictly in accordance with the law. The petitioner sought immediate remedial actions, including the installation of sewage treatment and pollution-control systems to preserve the lake's ecosystem.
The court's order comes after extensive reporting on the lake's deteriorating condition. Investigations revealed sewage and waste entering the lake through a concealed route, contradicting earlier claims about the pollution source. Despite concerns, NMC had previously extracted large volumes of water from the lake, though they maintained it served as an emergency backup and supplied water was treated.
