Google's Debug initiative is preparing to release 32 million male mosquitoes, treated with Wolbachia bacteria, across Florida and California in an effort to curb disease transmission. This method utilizes a principle similar to the Sterile Insect Technique, first developed in the 1950s, where sterile males are introduced into wild populations.
When these sterile males mate with wild females, their offspring do not hatch, thereby reducing the overall mosquito population. This approach, previously successful with pests like fruit flies and screwworms, targets mosquitoes capable of spreading serious illnesses. The planned experiment involves releasing 16 million sterile male mosquitoes in the first year and another 16 million in the second year.
While the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a carrier of dengue and Zika, has been a previous focus for Debug, the current request targets Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, known to transmit West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis. Despite the potential, the large-scale application of this technique for mosquito population control remains largely untested.
