District administration in Pilibhit is accelerating preparations for a Rs 12.26-crore project to rejuvenate the Gomti River. Approved under the Namami Gange Mission-3, the initiative is fully funded by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and includes five years of operation and maintenance.
The Gomti River's flow has been significantly impacted by historical revenue record errors from 1952, which erroneously listed river channels under farmers' names. This has led to cultivation within the riverbed, narrowing its course and impeding its natural flow. The district magistrate is exploring amicable solutions, including voluntary land donation or compensation for land acquisition.
A crucial aspect of the project involves the ecological revival of three historical lakes at the river's origin. Planned interventions include extensive desilting and cleaning of a 3.23-km escape channel, along with embankment repairs to manage monsoon flows and prevent stagnation.
Further measures to combat pollution at the source include addressing domestic wastewater from Madhotanda village. This involves constructing an interceptor drain, a local sewer network, a 1.09-MLD pumping station, and a 1-MLD nature-based sewage treatment plant utilizing horizontal-flow constructed wetland technology. Civil works are expected to commence shortly after the executing agency is finalized.
