Goa's first reverse vending machine, part of a deposit refund scheme, has been installed at the INS Mandovi naval base in Verem. This initiative is a collaboration between Recykal, the agency implementing the scheme, and the naval station's environment wing.
Naval personnel and their families attended a special presentation and live demonstration to understand how the machine collects specific items and provides refunds. The Navy Welfare and Wellness Association - Mandovi expressed delight in partnering for this environmental consciousness-building effort.
While over 130 village panchayats have permitted machine installations and six municipal bodies have joined, the Goa government has not yet set a final date for the statewide rollout of the deposit refund scheme. The government aims for Goa to be a pioneer in a citizen-friendly, circular economy for beverage and multi-layer packaging.
Demonstrations of reverse vending machines were also held at the Panaji KTC bus stand to familiarize commuters with the concept.
