Goa Gears Up for Hydrogen-Powered Ferries
28 May
Summary
- Goa may soon introduce hydrogen-powered electric passenger vessels.
- Cochin Shipyard Limited designed India's first indigenous hydrogen ferry.
- The initiative aims to reduce pollution and promote cleaner transport.

Goa may soon introduce hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric passenger vessels, following a proposal submitted by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). If approved, Goa would become the second Indian state to operate these services, following Uttar Pradesh, with the primary goal of reducing pollution and encouraging cleaner transport.
CSL has successfully designed, developed, and demonstrated India's first indigenous 50-passenger hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vessel. This vessel is currently undergoing commercial operations after its delivery to the Inland Waterways Authority of India in Varanasi.
The company proposes a collaboration with the Goa Energy Development Agency to launch this initiative. Hydrogen fuel cells offer significant advantages for marine applications, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, quieter operation, and extended range. These systems combine hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, with water as their sole byproduct, presenting an environmentally friendly solution for sustainable marine transportation.
